Describe a normal day in the kitchen
Think through breakfast, grocery storage, cooking and cleanup. Who uses the kitchen at the same time? Where do bags land, appliances live and dishes collect? A useful brief describes these routines before it lists cabinet colours.
Note the connections to dining and living areas. Identify routes that should stay clear and the views you want to preserve. A larger island or a new opening should be considered in relation to the whole room and reviewed against the actual space.
Turn storage into a specific list
Inventory the items that take up room: cookware, small appliances, pantry goods, recycling and cleaning supplies. Identify what you want visible and what should be stored out of sight. A practical storage plan is more specific than simply asking for more cabinets.
Discuss the reach and access needs of the people who use the room. Test the proposed arrangement with the team, including door and drawer movement. Concept proportions are references; the final layout needs measured checks.
Coordinate appliances and services early
Gather model information for appliances you want to keep or purchase. Dimensions, openings, ventilation and service requirements need to be coordinated with cabinetry and work surfaces. Do not assume that two products described with the same nominal width have identical installation needs.
Changing plumbing, electrical work, ventilation or structural elements can add design and trade coordination. State those intentions early so the team can identify the review required before the layout or scope is committed.
Use finishes to connect the decisions
Once the practical layout is defined, compare cabinet, work-surface, floor and lighting samples together. Consider cleaning, wear, transitions to neighbouring rooms and the lighting in your own home. Choose a small set of references that explains the relationship between materials.
Ask which decisions must be final before ordering, who approves drawings and how substitutions or changes are documented. Discuss a temporary cooking arrangement and access during the work. Confirm the project-specific sequence and timing in writing rather than relying on an example from another renovation.
